‘Oh Ashwin, Ashwin, wherefore art thou?’

The #2 ranked Test bowler in the World with over 600 international wickets! Could he have been the difference in this current test match as England need 291 runs on the final day at The Oval? 🤔

It is surprising to see Ravi Ashwin being left on the sidelines for India in their test series against England. There is no doubt Ashwin is a terrific bowler, and can do it in all conditions and formats, so what is it about him that makes him so successful?

ALIGNMENT AND RELEASE - Ashwin has worked hard over the years to ensure he is properly aligned at the crease. The most important parts for Ashwin have been making sure his front foot and front arm point directly at the batsman. These two technical aspects ensure he is able to generate maximum momentum up and over the front leg, creating a high release point. At the end of his action, he follows through towards the batsman as opposed to falling off towards cover.

VARIATIONS - A key weapon of any spin bowler is their variations. He uses a variety of grips and wrist positions to generate different deliveries that are difficult for a batsman to play. His carrom ball in particular, takes extreme skill and dedication to be able to bowl.

SIMPLICITY- Ashwin has said many times that he strives for simplicity in his action. He puts most of his time and effort into nailing the basics, because he knows that will get him the results. While a key part of Ashwin’s game is the variations, those deliveries are made more effective by the strength of his stock ball.
